《新闻周刊》每两年评选一次全美国最好的高中, 标准是学生选修Advanced Placement (AP) 和International Baccalaureate (IB)的平均数量. 他们只评选公开招生的中学, 所以美国最有名的几所高中, 如NY的Stuyvesant高中(毕业生SAT平均分在1400左右!)不在其列。美国留学网（http://us.eu.com.cn/）指出，很多私立学校也没别列入, 因为它们不肯偷露考试分数.最后无论具体排名多少, 这1000所高中都属于全国top 4%.
